Attorney Jamy Buchanan Madeja brings a wealth of experience to clients throughout Massachusetts. Before establishing her own practice in 1995, she served as General Counsel to the Executive Office of Environmental Affairs for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, appointed by Governor William F. Weld. In that position, she was responsible for the legal, regulatory and enforcement affairs of five separate state agencies and served on numerous boards and task forces, ex officio, including the Massachusetts Aeronautics Commission.  She continues to appear regularly in legislative hearings governing environmental issues, keeping up with the latest developments in environmental matters.

Buchanan & Associates represents a broad spectrum of clients, from neighborhood organizations and trade associations to municipal departments and corporations. The firm's clients include environmental advocacy groups as well as private companies and not-for-profit entities.

The firm's comprehensive environmental practice includes representation in matters involving:

  • Environmental permitting, land use & transportation planning - The firm counsels clients on waterfront development, wetlands management, and actions under the Massachusetts Environmental Policy Act (MEPA). The firm handles extensive Chapter 91 licensing matters, Municipal Harbor Plan concerns, and issues involving Designated Port Areas.  Ms. Madeja participates in frequent collaborative efforts with neighborhood associations ranging from East Boston to South Boston and Archdale/Roslindale.  Ms. Madeja is a frequent participant in the Poprt Operators Group, co-managed by MassPort and the United States Coast guard.
  • Ocean management - Buchanan & Associates represents marinas, boatyards, recreational boating businesses and other clients, handling matters involving licensing and permitting, wetlands approval, compliance with state environmental regulations and contract matters.
  • Government relations - The firm advises clients who are involved in hearings or proceedings with government agencies or legislative bodies, helping them effectively work to accomplish their objectives. This includes helping for profit and non-profit, as well as government entities in securing permits, policy changes, or government funding. Attorney Madeja is a registered lobbyist in Massachusetts with extensive experience testifying in legislative proceedings.

The firm advocates for parties in environmental protection and enforcement cases and has provided counsel regarding contaminated or hazardous waste sites.
